PALIMPSEST: WOMEN, TEXT, AND THE ACT OF SELF-INSCRIPTION
This September, Which Witch Collective presents a group exhibition of seven ESEA female artists: Palimpsest: Women, Text, and the Act of Self-Inscription, at the distinctive hARTslane gallery in Southeast London, running from September 15 to 17.
Women existed before writing, their presence independent of being recorded or named, preceding the flow of language. Writing has never spoken with one voice, among its layers are the inscriptions of women’s bodies, memories, and resistance. Building on this concept, Palimpsest explores how women inscribe and rewrite themselves through text, body, and art, generating new forms of presence from silence and memory. From the secretive women's scripts Nüshu to contemporary digital and experimental texts, visitors will encounter interactive installations, visual poetry, handwritten traces, and performances, also be invited to reflect on the question: how do women reclaim their existence through text and memory?
Curated by Wenqi Zhang, the exhibition features works by Jiayi Chen, Xindi Sun, Yuxi Zhong, Virginie Tan, Xuyi Yao, Cinnamon, and Xi Liang. On the opening night, Nüshu artist Jiayi Chen will present a performance, embodying the inscriptions of Nüshu as a living archive of memory and feminine resilience.
